Underdog is a McPherson Media Group documentary produced by News senior photographer Megan Fisher and reporter Jay Bryce.
The News followed the Shepparton Gators throughout their 2024 season, for what was their first time in the Big V Championship in two decades, documenting the team’s highs and lows, capturing the essence of what makes the Gators and their story so unique to the sporting community in Shepparton.
This project is the culmination of a huge amount of work behind the scenes, but would not have been possible without the help and support of the Gators — from fans to officials, administrators and coaches to the players themselves — as well as the wider Greater Shepparton Basketball Association.
We are proud to showcase the story of the Shepparton Gators — and even prouder to highlight the variety and quality of content our regional newsroom can produce.
While Underdog will eventually launch on The News’ website for subscribers to consume, don’t miss the opportunity to be there — with many of those involved in the Gators’ program — when it debuts on screen for the first time.
The official screening will take place at the University of Melbourne Department of Rural Health, which is located at 49 Graham St, Shepparton (opposite GV Health) at 6pm for a 6.30pm start on Thursday, November 21.
Tickets are $15, with all money raised from tickets going towards supporting All Abilities basketball in Shepparton.
This exclusive first screening is brought to you through the support of Gagliardi Scott Real Estate, The Nelson Family, Conquest Pools, state Member for Shepparton Kim O'Keeffe, Synergy Traffic, CAF Consulting, the University of Melbourne and McPherson Media Group.
Tickets are available at Eventbrite (tinyurl.com/z4b3jh33). Get in quick because tickets are limited.
