In the four games decided up to and including Sunday — two one-dayers and two T20 games — the Vics had dropped only one game, to South Australia, which made a spectacular late batting recovery to cause the upset in last Friday’s opening round of the carnival.
The Vics had the carnival hosts on the ropes at 8-86 before a 128-run ninth-wicket stand propelled South Australia to a final and winning score of 214.
In reply, Victoria was bowled out for 147 in 42.5 overs.
But the Vics bounced back on the second day to defeat Tasmania, taking just 27 overs to cover the Apple State’s modest score of 133.
Shepparton’s Tyler Larkin made 16 off 25 deliveries for the Vics.
Then in the first of the two T20 games on Sunday, Waaia’s Jesse Trower picked up 3-9 off four overs as Victoria downed reigning premier Queensland.
The Vics restricted Queensland to 91 in 17.4 overs after Victoria had posted a respectable 4-147.
In their second T20 game, also on Sunday, Kyabram’s Kyle Mueller, who had low scores in the two opening games, was being hailed a match winner after taking a spectacular boundary catch that thwarted a late bid from another of the competition’s powerhouse teams, NSW, to steal the game at the death.
Mueller was also at the batting crease and looking ominous with 12 not out in Victoria’s innings of 9-150.
NSW was 2-81 at one stage in its run chase but lost 8-49 to spiral to a 20-run loss.
There was a rest day on Monday and on Tuesday Victoria was to take on South Australia again before tackling Queensland on Wednesday, NSW on Thursday and Western Australia in the final round on Friday.
There are no finals, and the state that heads the ladder after the ninth and final game is crowned the premier.
