It was an ignominious return to action for local sides as the Goulburn Murray Cricket women’s competition got back under way in the new year.
Cooma vs Echuca

Defending champion Echuca proved too skilful for a resilient Cooma side, winning by 83 runs.
Batting first, openers Gillian Noelker and Maisy Byrne gave Echuca the perfect start, adding 37 for the first wicket before Byrne (15) was run out on the ball that would have caused her retirement.
Captain Jessica Cox entered at four, combining with Noelker until the latter’s retirement on 21.
Cox kept the scoreboard moving, progressing at quicker than a run a ball, while Matilda Smith was stable at the other end, contributing 12.
Eventually retiring on 38 from her 30 balls, Cox got her side well past the 100 mark, the middle order chipping in as Echuca posted 3-124 from its 20 overs.
Cathy Dervish (1-9) and Evie Harman (1-18) both picked up wickets for Cooma.
The Cooma batters did well to preserve their wickets but Echuca’s line and length was too tight for them to get the ball away.
The top three of Ruby Harman, Dervish and Jen Drew all stuck around for more than 20 deliveries, but were unable to crack double figures.
Earning useful time in the middle turned into the takeaway from the fixture as Cooma batted out the 20 overs, making just 5-41.
Noelker, Byrne, Marli Hollamby and Zoe Cook took a wicket each.
Cooma will host Rochester in the next round.
Kyabram vs Katamatite
Kyabram hosted Katamatite at Kyabram Recreation Reserve, but the Redbacks weren’t able to set a defendable total.
The loss of early wickets put Ky in a difficult position at 3-19, but Emma Roberts and Lacy Parsons were able to combine for a stabilising 22-run partnership.
Roberts would finish with the Redbacks’ top score of 14, while Eliza Linehan added 11.
While eight of the remaining nine batters got off the mark, none were able to reach double figures, Ky concluding its innings at 9-63.
Katamatite’s Kylie Wooden was the standout bowler, picking up 3-14.
The Redbacks had the Tigers reeling early in the chase, picking up three quick wickets to leave Katamatite 3-10.
Unfortunately, that was where the joy ended for the locals, Sienna Hutchinson combining with Georgia Watson for a game-defining partnership.
Hutchinson retired on 25 not out, and with Watson still at the crease on 14, the Tigers reached the total in the 15th over.
Lacy Parsons bowled well for the Redbacks, taking 2-7, while captain Grace Hammond (1-7) was the other wicket taker.
