In wet and cold conditions at Lancaster Recreation Reserve, the hosts played Dookie United in a thrilling round 10 Kyabram District League netball match.
The Wombats have been the team to beat this season, but the problem is, no-one can.
Heading into the match, Lancaster sat clear first on the ladder, with nine wins from nine games.
Dookie United had also played an impressive opening nine rounds of netball, winning seven matches.
However, with coach Michelle Hill at the helm, the Wombats were too strong for United, winning the match by four goals (42-38).
Hill believes that during a game, such as Saturday’s, when the rain is constant and the conditions are tricky, the best tactic is to play a simple brand of netball.
“We are a pretty fast side, so playing slow isn’t really our go-to, but it works for both sides too, as I am not sure how quick they (Dookie United) are in the dry,” Hill said.
“It changed our whole game and people were leading slower because it is slippery.
“Not fast and sharp netball, if you know what I mean.
“It brought both sides down to pretty basic level netball.”
In the wet, the pressure is on and the difficulty for goal scoring increases, but Hill said her attackers were up to the task.
“Lexi Thomas just seems to be getting better and better at goal attack; she got best-on yesterday,” she said.
“Chicky Vick and Lexi Thomas both shot pretty accurately in the wet conditions.
“Cass Westly combined well in the midcourt with Caddi Mulholland.
“Caddi played another consistent game in wing attack and centre.”
Hill believes that she and her side will have to move on quickly from their impressive victory over Dookie United for fear of getting ahead of themselves.
“We will just keep ticking away, one game at a time,” she said.
“We have got a few of the top sides (left to play) leading into finals, so we will see how we go the second time around against them.”
In other matches, Girgarre defeated Violet Town by 23 goals away from home.
Girgarre sits third on the ladder below Lancaster and Shepparton East.
In a high-scoring match, Merrigum defeated Undera by nine goals (48-39).
Tallygaroopna won a thriller against Murchison-Toolamba.
The three-goal victory was Tally’s fourth of the season.
Nagambie has secured a comprehensive win over Stanhope, with the score finishing 65-19 in the Lakers’ favour.
Shepparton East registered a similar result after it defeated Rushworth by 37 goals.
Meanwhile, Avenel beat Longwood by 25 goals on Sunday to finish the round’s action.
This weekend, Kyabram District League has a bye round.
