That was despite the round-robin event being played at the Kyabram Bowls Club, with 15 Goulburn Valley pennant stars involved.
McInnes had one win and a loss in his three-man section, beating former teammate and now Shepparton Golf star Brent Reiner 25-18 in their match. He lost the other game to eventual sectional winner, and semi-finalist, Shepparton Park’s Jarrad Greenfield (12-25).
The Kyabram star finished second in the section, but only the winners of the six sections advanced to the finals.
George had a similar story, narrowly losing his round one match with Shepparton Park’s Paul Nichols (23-25) before beating Col Power from Shepparton Golf 25-18. He only missed a spot in the finals on percentage as both Nichols and Power both won a game apiece.
Ironically, for George at least it was Power who went on to make the final of the event. He lost the final to Tallygaroopna’s Geoff Franze 22-25.
Franze is the second ranked division one pennant bowler in the Goulburn Valley this season, with a 7-1 record from the opening nine rounds (one draw). Of the other combatants Nichols is the competition’s sixth seed.
- Sally Beach is the women’s club champion at Tongala Bowls Club, taking the title from Jorja Ponton in the pre-Christmas final.
Beach is the sixth-ranked second bowler in the Campaspe Playing Area division one weekend pennant competition, with a 4-4 record, bowling in the same rink as star skip Brad Tinning.
In the men’s event it was victory for Matt Liverton, who beat Peter Tinning to claim the title. Tinning plays lead for the division one team, while Liverton has been skipping in recent weeks due to the absence of Steve Hammond.
Entries for Tongala’s $1500 R.E. Dick Australia Day Open Fours tournament close on January 19.
The event is four games of 10 ends and is the first of two rich events at the club, followed by the Tinning Family Open Two Bowl Triples event on Sunday, March 2. That event carries $1200 in prizemoney.
- Stanhope bowler Jamie Stokes represented the Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields region at the regional championships on January 11-12 at Ballarat.
She was selected to bowl third to Kyabram and Moama star Olivia Cartwright.
