Held at Lakeside Stadium, the top 24 athletes in each event in each age group from all around the state were out in force.
Kyabram produced five personal best performances and had one athlete reach the podium: Makore Dickinson in the shot put.
“We’ve seen our athletes strive for greatness in their chosen events and are so proud to have seen so many of them progress to state championships this year from our little centre,” KLAC president Claudia Moore said.
“Competing against the best in the state, with most achieving personal bests, shows how determined they are to do their best, which is amazing.”
2013 was the last time Kyabram was represented at the state titles by an under-9 athlete. Marley Vernon made her state title debut in the hurdles leaving nothing on the track in a clean performance down the 60 metres.
Distance runner Zac Wakenshaw slashed a second off his PB in the 800m in a gutsy performance.
The busiest athlete over the weekend, Makore Dickinson, was in season best condition for the championships. Having recorded personal bests in the discus and javelin, two and three meters respectively, shot put was where he found the most success. Securing second place on the podium, Dickinson edged out third place by one centimetre with his third-round effort.
In just her second attempt at the 1500m walk, Lily Taylor slashed 40 seconds from her PB to cement her name as one of Kyabram’s up and coming walkers.
Fellow under-12 athlete Mia Kilpatrick, put in a solid performance in the long jump, recording a best leap of 3.81m.
In his state championships debut, Keplar Cleveland proved he wasn’t there to muck around. A personal best in the shot put meant nothing could dampen his mood.
Seasoned jumper Grace Kilpatrick, made herself at home in the triple jump. Staying cool, calm and collected through the event, Kilpatrick hopped, stepped and jumped into a respectable 18th place.
Nearing the end of his little athletics career, Jayden Taylor proved there’s still more to come next season. Bettering his regional performance in the high jump and staying consistent in the triple jump, Taylor marked his name in 11th and 16th place respectively.
