Season in Review
Three draws have wreaked havoc with the top three teams.
Murchison-Toolamba has drawn with Lancaster and Shepparton East this season, meaning the prized double chance for second came down the last round of the season.
At the opposite end of the top six it was a late charge by Tallygaroopna which secured it a place in the finals, at the expense of Stanhope.
The Lions had to play Murchison-Toolamba twice and Lancaster in their final five games.
Avenel has played only one top six team in the past eight weeks, losing to Lancaster by 58 points in round 11. It won all of its final five games, but has lost to all three teams above it on the ladder.
Before the weekend Shepparton East hadn’t not lost a game since round two (apart from the round 12 draw with Murchison-Toolamba) — when Lancaster beat it by 37 points.
How teams finished: Murchison-Toolamba 60pts, Lancaster 58, Shepparton East 54, Avenel 52, Nagambie 40, Tallygaroopna 40, Stanhope 40, Longwood 24, Dookie United 20, Rushworth 20, Girgarre 20, Merrigum 16, Violet Town 4, Undera 0.
This weekend: Shepparton East v Tallygaroopna (at Avenel on Saturday, August 24), Avenel v Nagambie (at Lancaster on Sunday, August 25)
Next weekend: Murchison-Toolamba v Lancaster (at Girgarre on Saturday, August 31). Winner of Shepparton East/Tallygaroopna will play winner of Avenel/Nagambie (Sunday, September 1 at Undera).
Lancaster
Best win: Round two 37-point win against Shepparton East, which it beat again at the weekend by four points.
Results versus top six teams: Beat Shepparton East by 37 points (Round two) and four points (Round 16), Beat Nagambie by 36 points Round four and lost to the Lakers by 20 points Round 14, 71-all draw with Murchison-Toolamba (Round five), 59 point win against Avenel in Round 11, 24 point win against Tallygaroopna (Round 13)..
Most wins in a row: Won four on end to start season, then drew with Murchison-Toolamba. Then won eight straight before the loss to Nagambie.
Biggest score: Two scores of 200-points plus — 36.19 (235) against Undera and 33.30 (228) against Violet Town. Kicked 30.17 (197) against Violet Town in Round three.
Worst result: Only loss of season was in Round 14 (by 20 points to Nagambie) when it was missing Serra, Boscarini, Newman, Thomson and Carroll.
Charlie McLay (co-captain): 16 games and 42 goals. Started the season as the Wombats’ main forward target, kicking 10 goals in round three and eight in round six. By round nine he had 33 goals, but since the arrival of Paul Newman has spent most games in the midfield.
Cameron Simpson: 13 games and 14 goals. Played 12 games last year, kicking two goals in the one-sided grand final win when he was best-on-ground for a second straight year. Arrived in 2022 from Northcote Park when he played 11 games (only eight in the home and away season) and revelled in the heavy going of the rain-soaked grand final.
Sam Spedding (co-captain): 16 games and 4 goals. Since crossing from Kyabram’s under-18 team in 2015 has played 116 games.
Logan Demasi 15 games. Will feature strongly in best-and-fairest voting with his dashing work at half-back and intecept marking.
Nicholas Kellow 15 games and 8 goals. Great first year with the Wombats after playing his entire career at Elmore.
Coby O’Neill 15 games and 1 goal. Has support in the ruck from Nick Ryan, Ricky Thomson and Wez Hill now. Had borne the load up until a month ago.
Zac Cerrone: 16 games and 70 goals. Has kicked bags of 14, 10, nine and eight this season after kicking 43 games in 17 games in his best-and-fairest season last year. Has gone past his previous best of 63 goals in 19 games in 2018.
Tannar Cerrone: 15 games and 23 goals. Doubled his output in front of goal after a 17-game-11-goal 2022 season. He was a teammate of Kellow at Elmore in 2022, having returned to the Wombats after playing his first senior game with the club in 2015 (when he kicked 41 goals in 11 games at under-18 level and also played nine senior games).
Nicholas McAuliffe: 9 games. Didn’t play his first game until round five and has missed another two since — having missed just two games in the back-to-back premiership seasons. Secret weapon against the league’s leading goal-kicker, James Lloyd, who he kept to four goals in the round five draw
Paul Newman: 6 games and 22 goals: Missed the first six games of the season and has twice been rested in the lead up to the finals
Phil Carroll: 11 games. Missed three successive games in the middle of the season after playing 34 out of 38 in the past two premiership seasons.
