Nathan Beck and Brad Mangan were leading the Kyabram Secondary College into the zone football final against defending champion Albury High School.

Mangan and Beck were playing alongside Jordan Souter, Michael Pride, Stanhope’s Alex O’Reilly and Matt Tinning (Tongala). The team was coached by Matt Ogden and had beaten Euroa, Mooroopna, Maguire College and Seymour to earn a place in the final.
The team won the final by 33 points, Beck best on ground and James Curnow kicking four goals. Liam Ogden, Matt Tyler and Adam Lovison were other good players.
— Kyabram’s Under-15 representative netball team was the star performer at the Kyabram Netball Association’s annual tournament.
The Penny Newman-coached side accounted for Benalla in the final by five goals, while the Under-11 and Under-17 teams were narrowly beaten in their finals.
1998
Jason Norman kicked five goals for Merrigum as it secured a spot in the top five of the Kyabram district league.
Leigh Hall, ruckman Scott Greig and Steve Pedretti provided support as the Bulldogs beat Lancaster by 59 points. For the Wombats Corey Carver kicked three goals and Ross Gemmill was the team’s best player.
Stanhope was sitting just outside the top five after Jodie Canavan took his goalkicking tally to 43 from seven games with a bag of five. Harry Liversidge, Neville Laffy and Shane Ohlsen were the Lions’ best in the 21-point loss to top-team Undera.
— Mary-Anne Canute and Cynna Neele were named the Kyabram Free Press-Apex Club Sportstars of the Year.
Netball prospect Neele had gained state selection for the second successive year, while Canute won the state champion of champions lawn bowls event at Moama and also represented the state.
Di Hanslow was named the winner of the Jack Arthur Memorial Award for the best contribution to local sport, through her netball achievements.
Kyabram Secondary College’s Year nine-10 cricket side took the team of the year title, winning the statewide schools sports association title with a nine-game winning streak, while special achievement awards were made to long-serving footballer Tony McDonnell, Tatura cricketer Peter Watt and Kyabram all-rounder sports star Katie Kennon.
— Troy Mitchell, who had kicked 10 goals in a reserve-grade Golburn Valley league match with Kyabram two weeks earlier, kicked another 10 for the third-ranked Bombers at senior level in a 90-point win against third-bottom Lemnos.
Mitchell and Danny Irwin, who kicked seven goals, dominated their opposition and had support from ruckman David Lucas and midfielder Brad Campbell.
— David James became the second youngest player to win the Valley View Golf Club championship.
Graeme Brown was the youngest ever winner, at 16 years of age, way back in 1963.
Brown, after completing school, joined the Huntingdale club in Melbourne and also won its championship.
James had won the 1998 title with rounds of 76, 78 and a par equalling 72, before a seven-over 79 in the final round. The Year 11 student won the title by 24 shots.
1988
Murchison’s Rob Walters kicked 12 goals and Ross Normington was best on ground in a headline-making 110-point win against Ardmona.
At the opposite end Darren Turner kicked 10 of his team’s 13 goals in the defeat to provide an extraordinary afternoon of entertainment for onlookers.
Lancaster was second on the ladder at the time, but had just lost to Avenel by 29 points. Steve Sharp and Les Dillon kicked two goals for the Wombats.
Wally Charles, Peter Myers and Brian Casey were Girgarre’s best players in its win against Tallygaroopna, where Russ Morgan kicked three goals and Wayne Deledio was also among the goalkickers.
— Former junior champions Murray Varcoe and Dallas Normington were Kyabram’s best players in its 13-point win against Seymour.
The Bombers were sitting seventh on the ladder after Rick Demarte continued his great form and Nick Quirk was also among the stars for the Bombers.
— Ty Elliott, younger brother of test cricketer Matt, won the Goulburn Campaspe Secondary School’s 3km cross-country title.
He had also qualified for the Eastern Zone athletics carnival in the 400 and 800-metre events.
1978
Des Campbell kicked three goals and was among the Goulburn Valley league’s best players as it beat Ovens and Murray by 16 points in the Winfield Victorian Country Football Championships.
The Tongala coach was, however, forced from the field after dominating the match early with a serious leg injury.
In the GVL team were Seymour legend Bernie McCarthy, Echuca’s John Haw and Mooroopna champion Gary Cooper.
— Echuca ruckman Brian “Doc” Kennaugh was best on ground for his team in its 25-point win against Kyabram, in a game where the Bombers’ two youngest players — Kelly O’Donnell and David Shaw — were its best players.
O’Donnell was on a wing and Shaw in a back pocket, having support from Tom Devlin and Peter Warburton.
—Stephen Hilton won the Sunkick competition at Kyabram with a kick of 52.2 metres, ahead of John Ohlsen. The pair won a place in the regional event at Deakin Reserve.
— Noel Reddrop led the “Trueboot’’ goalkicking award in the KDL with 50 goals from 10 games, his Lancaster team third on the Kyabram district league ladder at the time.
Algie Tonkin and Geoff Cox were the Wombats’ best in their 17-point loss to top-team Merrigum, which was best served by Tony Barca and Greg Pell.
