Merrigum’s Zak Parkinson and Stanhope co-captain Jack Donnell were selected in a back pocket and on a back flank in the team that was, as expected, dominated by the league’s unbeaten premier Murchison-Toolamba.
It was a shock, however, that only one of the three players that shared this year’s league best and fairest award were selected in the team. Only Nagambie star Blake Fothergill won a place in the team, on a wing, with teammate Reilly Old and Murchison-Toolamba’s James Milne (the other co-medallists) both missing selection
KDL TEAM OF THE YEAR
B: Zac Parkinson (Merrigum), Joshua Delaney (Avenel), Mark Nolan (Nagambie)
H-B: Jack Donnell (Stanhope), Lachie Devine (Murch-Tool), Liam Francis (Rushworth)
F: Zac Cerrone (Lancaster), James Lloyd (Murch-Tool), Jonathon Moore (Nagambie)
FOLL: Tom McClusky (Shepp East), Sam Mackerell (Murch-Tool), Jye Formosa (Longwood)
INTER: Nicolas Cunningham (Undera), Josh Temple (Girgarre), Adam Brophy (Tallygaroopna,) Jamie Spencer (Shepp East).
The Grasshoppers had four players in the team – Lachie Devine, Leigh Wellington and James Lloyd filling three of the five key positions, while Sam Mackrell was chosen as the team’s ruck rover.
Lancaster had just the two players in the team, Zac Cerrone in a forward pocket and Cameron Simpson on a forward flank.
Girgarre’s Josh Temple was the only Kangaroos player chosen in the team, while another consistent season earned Nathan O’Reilly a spot alongside teammate Donnell in the team.
- Two players who missed the Kyabram District League’s A-grade netball grand final through injury were slightly compensated with selection in the competition’s Team of the Year.
Lancaster stars Caddison Mulholland and Phillipa Inglis both suffered late season injuries and were forced to withdraw from the finals series, but when the team was announced last week they were at wing attack and in the centre.
Inglis could have also won a place in defence, where she played much of the season. They were joined by goaling teammate Chicquita Vick, who got the nod ahead of Girgarre’s premiership winning goaler Jacqui Gahan – who had an outstanding grand final.
Girgarre had two players in the squad of 12 players, Allana Adams at wing defence and Holly Nelson on the interchange. Merrigum had just one player, defender Breanna Baker, chosen in the team.
Nagambie league medallist Sharni Lloyd was chosen at goal attack, while Lakers defender Michelle Williams was at goal keeper and Sarah Maskell from Shepparton East was her defensive partner.
On the interchange with Nelson and Baker were Sharne Milne from Murchison-Toolamba, Dookie’s Gemma O’Sullivan and Kolby Wild from Violet Town.
- Lancaster senior football and netball coaches, Tom Davies and Michelle Hill, may not have walked away with premierships this season but both were recognised as the best coaches in their categories for the Kyabram District League season.
Before this year Davies had coached the Wombats to successive grand final wins, having shared duties in the abandoned 2021 season with now Kyabram coach Corey Carver.
Former star player Hill took Lancaster from well outside the finals to the grand final, but injuries cost them dearly at a vital stage of the season.
Young Lancaster star defender Charli Westerveld was named the league KDL Rising Star of netball, while Gemma Withall (Lancaster) and Bianca Atley (Stanhope) won the league’s spirit of netball awards.
Girgarre’s Tenealle Nicholson was named the league’s administrator of the year, while Merrigum walked away with a pair of best and fairest awards at the end of the best and fairest counts.
Alyssa Christou won the 17-and-under Glover Medal, while Bethany McKellar won the C-reserve KDL Medal. Stanhope goaler, and two time premiership player, Hayley Trevena won the C-grade McCormack medal.
