Division 1 played Seymour at home and lost overall 74 shots to 76. Maree Boswell’s rink was the only winning rink with an 11-shot win, 26 shots to 15. Maree and her team got out to a good lead 18 shots to 4 after 13 ends. After 19 ends they led 23 shots to 8. Seymour rallied and scored 7 shots over the next four ends to close the gap slightly. Maree and her team won the last two ends to hold on for a good win. Mary Greco and her team lost by 11 shots, 22 shots to 33. Seymour started strongly and led 17 shots to 5 after seven ends. Scoring 10 shots over the next five ends put Mary and her team back into the game 15 shots to 17.
The game was much closer after this but losing 7 shots on the second last end put the game out of reach. Jenni Dixon and her team went down by 2 shots, 26 shots to 28. This was a close game all the way through. The score was 18 shots to 19 on the 19th end. Losing 8 shots over the next two ends made it hard for Jenni and her team but they won 8 shots over the next four ends to just lose the game.
Division 2 travelled to Avenel, with some teams taking the scenic route to get there and back. In a tough game they were able to come away with a win, 79 shots to 66. Peter O’Brien’s rink had a good win, 32 shots to 20. They were down 6 shots to 12 after nine ends. A fightback saw them level the scores 15 shots all on the 14th end. They led 21 shots to 19 on the 20th end. Winning 11 shots over the last five ends saw them have a good win. Graham Woodcock’s rink won 28 shots to 22. Graham and his team raced away to lead 11 shots to 5 after nine ends. Avenel fought back to reduce that lead to 14 shots to 13 after 15 ends. Graham and his team won 9 shots over the next four ends to lead 23 shots to 14. Avenel fought back again and reduced the lead to 23 shots to 21 after 22 ends. Graham rallied his team, and they were able to win the next two ends to hold on for a win.
Jill Barrett and her team battled all day but went down 19 shots to 24. Both teams held the lead in this game at various times and the scores were level four times during the game. With the scores level, 19 shots all on the 20th end Avenel was able to win the last five ends for a 5 shot win.
Division 3 had a good victory over Nagambie, 70 shots to 55, with all rinks winning. Jan MacFadyen’s team won 28 shots to 17. The scores were level 6 shots all on the eighth end and 10 shots all on the 11th end. After that Jan and her team were able to control the game for an 11-shot win. Darryl Gade and his team won 22 shots to 20. This was a close game for the first half. By the 20th end Nagambie was leading 20 shots to 14. Winning 8 shots over the last five ends got Darryl and his team over the line. Nardo DiPetta and his team won 20 shots to 18. Nardo and his team played well and were able to keep the lead for the whole game. Losing 5 shots over the last two ends saw the game end closer than it had been for the whole day.
Division 4 played Merrigum on their greens and lost on all rinks for a final score of 60 shots to 70. Geoff Hocking went down 20 shots to 25. They led 9 shots to 6 after nine ends. The game turned around after this. The scores were level on the 14th and 22nd ends, but Merrigum were able to hang on for a 5 shot win. John Fanning lost 18 shots to 20, this was a close game with both teams leading at different points. Losing 4 shots on the last end saw John and his team lose by 2 shots. Murray Boswood, playing with his grandson, Henry, went down 22 shots to 25. This was another close game with both teams leading and the scores tied at different stages. Merrigum was able to hold on for a 3 shot win.
Weekend Pennant
Saturday Weekend Pennant saw Kyabram win in all sections and consolidate all their places in the top four. Division 1 accounted for East Shepparton 111-92 (14 points to 4), Division 2 overhauled Shepparton Park and won by 1 shot, 88-87 (16 points to 2), Division 4 mauled Tatura/Hilltop 102-67 (17 points to 1) and Division 6 moved within 1 point of top position with a huge win over Stanhope 85-48 (16 points to 0).
Division 1, led by the president and his deputy, started well and continued that way for the whole day. The inclusion of Rob George and Graeme King worked brilliantly with both playing superb games. 33 shots to 21 was a fitting result for a classy performance. Greg Shilling led his team to a workmanlike victory 24-13 with all players contributing. Paul McInnes and his team showed the fight that was needed of them after dropping a 7 on the 14th end to lose the lead. They backed each other up and only went down 28-29. Glenn Field’s team lost the mat and the game on the 19th end. They went down 26-29. Shepparton Park awaits Division 1 in round 11.
Lazarus had nothing on Division 2 at Shepparton Park on Saturday. When Phil Denham finally scored on the 13th to trail 1-23, the game was in a shambles. Phil’s side gave the team hope by coming back to only lose 18-30 and with Peter O’Brien grabbing 10 shots over the last 4 ends it set up a fabulous finish. Darren Boswood’s team had played well all day and contributed a vital 21-18 win. With Don Cook’s team last on the green Kyabram only trailed by 2. With Chris Preddy steadying everyone down, Don drew the 3rd shot and the Kyabram players celebrated one of the club’s great wins. Rushworth at home is Division 2’s next assignment.
In Division 4 Ray Harrison with Maurie Hateley, Darren Gade and Tom Polgaze all playing well blitzed their Hilltop opponents 35-10. Ted Hazelman had the old firm back together and won comfortably 23-15. Nardo Di Petta led his team to a 23-17 victory and Graeme Woodcock had the close one with a 25-all draw. Euroa at home is next week’s challenge.
Division 6 crushed Stanhope at home, with Brad McIntosh winning 36-16 in another splendid display. The Master, Murray Boswood, and his crew disposed of their opposition 30-14, while the MacFadyens plus two won a close battle 19-18 to gain maximum points. All roads lead to Colbinnabin for the blockbuster top-of-the-table clash next Saturday.
Kyabram Div 4 comfortably defeated Tatura Hilltop with 3 rinks up and one draw. 103 shots to 67 and 17 points to 1.
Valley View
Midweek bowls was played at Valley View against second-on-the-ladder Echuca. The rinks came away winning one of the three matches, going down by 22 shots, 53/75.
Helen Emery’s rink came up against a tough rink led by M. Malone, only being 5 down after 11 ends, Echuca picked up 17 shots to Valley View’s 5, eventually going down 13/30.
Leanne Busch’s rink had a close encounter with H. Trotter’s rink leading up until the 16th end when Echuca drew level and went on to claim 11 shots to 4 over the closing 5 ends to go down 19/26.
The rink skipped by Bev Lyon kept themselves within a couple of shots of the lead and by the 16th end the score was 12/15 down. Over the closing 5 ends the Valley View girls managed to pick up 11 shots to 4 including a great 5 on the 19th to give them the lead by 2 shots. Both rinks picked up 1 each over the closing two ends to give Valley View the win 21/19. Well done, girls. Next week we travel to Lockington. Good bowling.
The Saturday pennant team travelled to Mathoura where they also came up against the second team on the ladder, and came away with a win 41/28.
Ken Black’s team came up against P. Cowley’s team and only went down by 2 shots 15/17. Valley View led for most of the day opening up in fine form leading 12/5 after the 11th end. From then on the Mathoura Red team came home with 10 shots to 3 over the closing 9 ends to be all square after 20 ends. The Mathoura bowlers managed to pick up 2 shots on the last to hold on for the win.
Rod Donohue’s rink was up against C. Frampton’s rink. Valley View held the lead by 2 shots after the 7th end, before pulling away with great bowling holding 19 shots to 6 including a magnificent 7 on the 9th over the remaining 14 ends, running away with the win 26/11. Giving Valley View the win by 13 shots. Well done.
Next week’s match is at Moama. Good bowling.
Merrigum
We have had another successful week with a win on Tuesday against Kyabram and a win on Saturday at East Shepparton.
On Tuesday Wayne Shepherd, Glen Smith, Neil Gardiner and Carmen Quattrocchi played G. Hocking and won by five shots. The game was even, with the scores being equal on ends four, 14 and 22, but to their credit the Merrigum rink won five shots on the last three ends to gain two valuable points.
Joe Chant, Graeme Hubble, Maureen Shepherd and Wendy Baxter met M. Boswood and won by three shots. This game was also even, with the scores tied on ends nine and 13, but Kyabram hit the front on end 15. Over the last 10 ends Merrigum outscored Kyabram by nine shots to five to gain a three-shot win.
In the last game John Firmer, Carol Firmer, Noreen Earl and Clive Baxter beat J. Fanning by two shots. Although Merrigum won the game they were only ahead twice for the game, on the first end they scored a single and on the last end they started two shots down and drew four shots. Well done!
The final result was Merrigum 70 shots to Kyabram 60, which gave Merrigum 16 points to nil.
On Saturday we travelled to East Shepparton and played on an outside green. It took the Merrigum teams at least three ends to get the speed of the green and they did a good job to win by nine shots.
This gave Merrigum 14 points and East Shepparton four points.
John Firmer, Wayne Shepherd, Neil Gardiner and Clive Baxter certainly erased the memory of last Saturday and had a convincing 14-shot win. They played B. Sutton and at no stage were they seriously challenged. Congratulations on turning your form around in a week. You all played very well.
David Pettifer, Colin Capes, Carol Firmer and Graeme Hubble drew R. Murdoch and won by six shots. Merrigum began well and after 16 ends they led by 15 shots. They only managed three singles over the final ends but had enough lead to record a strong win. A good team effort and it was great to see Graeme Hubble again playing well.
Glen Smith, Joe Chant, Noreen Earl and Carmen Quattrocchi payed Ron le Lievre and lost by two shots. The game was probably lost on the second end when they dropped five shots simply because they hadn’t worked out the pace of the green. By the fifth end they were nine shots behind but then got on to the pace of the green and played much better. They outscored the opposition for the remainder of the game but just couldn’t hold on to the lead. Well done to the East Shepparton boys, they deserved the win.
Gary Mott, Peter Hoare, Caleb Dixon and Barry McMeeken opposed Ian Hall and lost by nine shots. Merrigum began slowly and were 7 shots down after four ends. However, they also picked up their game and at the completion of end 15 they were only one shot in arrears but then East Shepparton scored 11 shots in the next four ends and that was the end of any chance the Merrigum boys had of winning.
Colin Capes is to play the winner of John Firmer and Joe Chant for the club championship. This is Colin’s first year at the club and it is a fine effort to be playing off for the major prize.
