But despite the decisiveness of the victory new Tongala non-playing coach Steve Hammond was not overly impressed.
‘‘We had a good win, but it was ugly,’’ Hammond said.
‘‘We turned it over a lot and messed up a lot of the basic things. But a win is a win.
‘‘We were only 15 points up at three-quarter time, but finished the game off fairly well.’’
What did please Hammond though was the continued good form of his star players and the efforts of a couple of young newcomers.
Bailey Waasdorp was influential again with his ability to win the hard ball and relentless running which created a lot of scoring chances for the Blues.
Matt Daniel was superb in defence along with Sam Cipriani, a noted goal-kicker in the past, who is adjusting well to his new role at centre half-back.
Along with Alex Williams playing his 100th game Tongala’s defence was solid all day.
Waasdorp and Mackenzie and Riley Cowley were Tongala’s main prime movers in the game.
Mackenzie could have had a huge game only for failing to finish off near goals, credited with kicking 2.6 for the match, while Riley on a wing and half-forward played with a lot of passion.
Young debutants Zeke Newman and Kade Northausen pleased Hammond with their efforts.
Newman on a wing and defence and Northausen on a wing showed they could handle the step up in class.
Hammond promised he would be willing to promote young talent in the team at every chance.
‘‘We’ve got a lot to work on and there is a lot of room for improvement,’’ he said.
Tongala faces a much tougher test this Friday against Nathalia at Nathalia.
Tonny tallied an even larger win in the reserves against Barooga, asserting it’s authority with an 155-point victory.
Jayden Tucker was the spearhead of the Blues’ attack against the Hawks, collecting a five-goal bag en route to a 27.15 (177) to 3.4 (22) thrashing.
The under-17’s unit had a similarly great day out against Barooga, notching a 75-point rout to remain undefeated heading into Easter weekend.
Captain Will Brennan led the way in front of goal, kicking a trio of maximums to lift his side to an 18.8 (116) to 6.5 (41) win.
