Ready for pre-season
Kyabram Football Club will have three tough pre-season games under its belt to launch into the new Goulburn Valley League season in early April.
The new-look Bombers will meet last year’s Murray Football League runner-up Congupna in their first hit-out on Friday, March 8, at Congupna.
The following week, the club will take on Bendigo League reigning premier Golden Square at Golden Square.
In the final match the side will tackle another Bendigo League team, South Bendigo, at Lancaster.
The Bombers will meet Mooroopna under lights at Kyabram to kick off the GVL season on Saturday, April 6.
The Bombers also have night games in round two against Rochester at Rochester on April 13 and then on April 20 against Euroa at Kyabram.
30th win for Hammond
Tongala jockey Rose Hammond reached a milestone in her riding career last week.
Hammond partnered Mutsuhito to victory in a maiden plate at Benalla which was her 30th win from 386 rides.
Mutsuhito is trained by her Echuca-based boss Gwenda Johnstone
Waaia above the competition
It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it tiny town, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to sport.
Waaia’s cricketers have just finished on top of the ladder in Cricket Shepparton’s elite Haisman Shield competition and are favourites to go all the way when the finals start on Saturday.
When you look at the teams and sizes of the towns Waaia has upstaged to be the minor premier it’s a significant feat to get where it has even if it doesn’t win the flag.
But cricket is not the only sport they excel in at Waaia.
It has been premier of Picola District Football League for the past two seasons and in its history dating back to 1932 it has won 12 senior flags, equal with Picola United, and six more than any other club.
Finding her stride
For a trotter who went winless in her first 30 starts Tongala-trained trotting mare Vici Bloom is certainly making up for lost time.
At last week’s Bendigo meeting the four-year-old daughter of Orlando Vic, driven by Tayla French, continued her current form resurgence with a runaway win.
The Michael Watt-trained mare ran her rivals ragged over the 2150m trip, spacing the runner-up Tranquil Bill by more than 36m in 2:02.1 PB mile rate time.
Vici Bloom has now won two races and has been runner-up twice in her past four starts — not bad for a mare who couldn’t win a race in 30 tries previously.
