Man caught driving unlicensed in Shepparton

A man who was caught driving unlicensed in Shepparton has faced court.

A man was on track to get his licence back the day after he was picked up driving unlicensed, a court has heard.

Dean Anthony Gravina, 58, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to driving unlicensed.

Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Chris Cole said Gravina was pulled over by police on Drummond Rd, Shepparton on May 25 driving with a licence that had been cancelled.

When police asked him the reason he was driving unlicensed, he said “stupid”, Leading Sen Constable Cole said.

Gravina’s solicitor, Luke Slater, said his client had been disqualified from driving for six months for a low-level traffic infringement, and the disqualification period had ended in April.

However, he couldn’t book in for the course he had to complete to get his licence back, but he was scheduled to complete it the day after the offence.

Mr Slater asked magistrate Megan Casey not to interfere with Gravina’s licence because he was self-employed and travelled around the area to install blinds.

Ms Casey said Gravina’s error was not waiting the extra day to do the course.

He was fined $400 and no conviction was recorded.
