PREMIUM Opinion Letter to the editor | Ward system: a voice for all By Letter to the Editor Nov 18, 2024 Letter to the editor. Photo by Megan Fisher Keren Fletcher, Congupna Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content I must be a nobody because I was one who asked for a ward system. I’m sure there must have been someone else too, or it wouldn’t have happened. Ethnic and gender diversity is not the role of the council. It is to represent the people who live in it. Wards are like the US electoral college system. They ensure that areas with large populations do not outvote smaller communities. It has given a voice to those who live outside the city boundaries. I’m sure those men elected are intelligent enough to vote on matters before them just as impartially as a woman would. Best wishes to all our democratically elected councillors.
