As the school calendar tiptoes toward term one, motorists are reminded of the crucial speed zones in effect.
Starting Wednesday, January 29, and continuing until the end of term one on Friday, April 4, school speed zones will be active from 8am to 9.30am and again from 2.30pm to 4pm on weekdays.
Motorists should prepare for increased road, pedestrian and bicycle traffic around schools and near bus stops during drop-off and pick-up times.
Safety is paramount as younger children often do not possess the same level of road awareness as adults, making their behaviour near roads unpredictable.
Motorists are urged to remain vigilant when navigating these school zones.
School speed zones across the state align with the Victorian Government school calendar, with some being permanent and others in effect on weekdays from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm.
All sign-posted speed reductions will still apply whether a school is open or closed or has a student-free day.
The Department of Transport and Planning thanks motorists and passengers for their adherence and alertness as the school year kicks off.
