The Kyabram Croquet Club held its social day on Monday, September 23, with dozens of players honing their skills and enjoying friendly matches on the green.
It was a beautiful sunny day for a game or two of croquet, and the clubhouse was in full swing, hosting teams from Shepparton, Rich River, Quarry Hill, Mooroopna, Uroa, Echuca and Deniliquin.
Kyabram vice-president Val Mulholland, was teamed up with first-year croquet rookie Alan Londey in their social game against Joy Sutherland from Mooroopna and Sandra Retallick from Rich River.
Mr Londey has been playing croquet for about 12 months, while Mrs Mulholland has played for six years.
“It’s a very relaxing sport ... I knew a few people down here and came down and been here ever since,” Mr Londey said.
“I’m not quite up to the best standard, but I’m having a lot of fun trying.”
Kyabram Croquet Club is holding another ‘come and play’ day on October 8 from 9am to noon, and at 7pm all seniors are invited to come along for a game or two of croquet.
The Seniors Festival is delivered across the state, with all 79 local councils creating celebrations for our older citizens with the aim of providing opportunities for engaging, free and low-cost entertainment.
This year’s theme of ‘Explore. Engage. Evolve’ aims to encourage older Victorians to stay curious and connected by trying new activities, connecting with new people and, in turn, changing the status quo of ageing.
Croquet club secretary Thelma O’Keefe said she hoped she would see new faces out on the green at the open day in October.
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a complete novice, friendly members will warmly guide you through the basics, ensuring everyone can enjoy a delightful social game on the green.
Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be served, adding to the convivial atmosphere.
For comfort and to protect the green, the club kindly requests participants wear flat-soled shoes.
Head to Kyabram Croquet Club on Church St on October 8 for some friendly competition, to try something new or to meet a new friend or two.
