The ‘Our Common Home’ art project from St Augustine’s was recognised at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday, November 10 for its potential to create art, drive change and shape the community.
The $15,000 Philomena Billington Social Justice Through the Arts Scholarship was awarded to students from Prep to Year 4 to enhance their understanding of Christian stewardship and Indigenous culture.
Workshops led by Yorta-Yorta artist Tammy-Lee Atkinson, along with education officers Aunty Greta Morgan, Aunty Hilda Stewart and others, will guide students in the design process to produce metal bin covers, metal bollards and an Indigenous garden at the college’s entrance.
The college thanked Campaspe Shire Council, Neville Hunter of Kyabram Landcare and Brigidine Sister Cecilia Merrigan for their support during the application process.
Laura Graetz, a Year 11 student, received the top prize in the VCE Art Award section for her oil painting Peering Through, which is now competing for the People’s Choice Award at the exhibition.
Additionally, Jemma Heart, a Year 7 student, won the Junior Secondary People’s Choice Award with her artwork Life.
Voting for the People’s Choice Award closes on November 26, with the winners announced on November 28 on the Catholic Education Sandhurst Facebook page.
