PREMIUM News September: By Deniliquin Pastoral Times Jan 14, 2025 In honour of Retired Police Day, we shared a story from the NSW Police Force on local personality Roger Smith. He followed in the footsteps of his stepfather Superintendent Roy Elliot QPM, and Roger was followed into the force by his son Paul, who is the current Superintendent of Murray River Police District. Pictured are Roger and his son when Paul graduated from the Police Academy in 1987. Photo by Ashley Bold Ben Dunmore enlisted help from the Deniliquin community to provide youth in East Timor with footy boots after an eye opening Ballarat Grammar school trip to the country. In addition to a bake sale at his school, Ben called on the Deni commuinity to donate football and soccer boots to send back to East Timor. The Navorina Auxiliary’s two day fundraising garage sale was possibly the most lucrative garage sale ever held in Deniliquin. Auxiliary chair Mari Drennan confirmed “well over” $8000 was raised, despite a number of the items donated not being sold. All proceeds will be donated to provide further comfort and quality of living for Navorina Aged Care residents. Two of Deniliquin’s rescue agencies were under the spotlight when NSW Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib’s regional tour came to Deniliquin. Here to hand over a new boat for the Deniliquin-Conargo SES Unit, Mr Dib also visited Deniliquin Rescue Squad - VRA Rescue NSW. He and NSW Member for Murray Helen Dalton donned the trademark green overalls and were hands on in a rescue demonstration. The Deniliquin High School Year 12 cohort bid farewell to the school in the traditional final assembly. It was hosted by the school’s new school captains and their beloved year group adviser Kylie Barker, and included a parting speech about some of the escapades and memorable misadventures of the year group. Deniliquin’s Jack Henderson won the Norm Goss Medal for best on ground in Werribee’s grand final hit-out with Southport Sharks in the VFL. Werribee took out the Smithy’s VFL Premiership for the first time in more than 30 years, 10.09 (69) to Southport 08.15 (63). Henderson was undeniable in his performance, collecting 23 disposals, kicking two goals, racking up eight tackles and five clearances. By Deniliquin Pastoral Times Newspaper
