One of the group's co-ordinators, Steve Grima, said dog owners shouldn't have to drive about 30 minutes to legally give their furry friends the opportunity to roam free.
The locals say Edis Park, a site on Dawes Rd and land adjacent to Drum Rd are three areas that would be suitable to house a dedicated off-leash dog park.
Mr Grima said a petition to create a dog-friendly area in Kyabram gained more than 800 signatures.
Campaspe Shire Council said dogs were permitted to be off-leash at Edis Park, Kyabram Recreation Reserve, Memorial Gardens, Northern Oval and Racecourse Reserve.
“Dogs are welcome to run and play in these areas, but must be in full control by their owners by calling the dog’s name or making a similar command,” community general manager Keith Oberin said.
In June 2020, Moama opened up its dedicated area, while one at Princess Park in Shepparton is expected to open before August.
Further south, Euroa recently had its dedicated off-leash dog park approved by the Strathbogie Shire.
“We took our dog to Moama,” Mr Grima.
“Just to see how happy she was and how excited she was, we just let her go free.
“It was all enclosed with rock pools and sandpits; it had the whole works.
“I thought, how good would this be in Kyabram instead of driving 40 minutes to Moama."
Mr Oberin said there was work in the pipeline for it to become reality in Kyabram.
“A designated off-leash dog park in Kyabram has been a popular initiative amongst local working groups involved in developing the Kyabram Place Based Plan,” he said.
“The park is included in the draft plan, which is expected to be formalised in the coming months.
“A full list of locations where dogs are permitted to be off-leash, when in public reserves, is located on council’s website under Our Services, Animals & pets.
“There are currently no designated off-leash dog parks in Campaspe Shire.”
Mr Grima said the group understood there was a lengthy process before a designated area for pooches was approved.
Ky Paws ‘n’ Claws owner Vonda Meloni said a designated area would translate into "happy dog, happy owner".
The group's petition is still available to sign by scanning the QR code on its poster in the Albion Arcade.
