Kyabram wicketkeeper Steve Bubb was selected as the gloveman for Victoria’s country cricket team to compete at the national carnival in Brisbane.
Bubb, 26, was overlooked for the team that had taken on the touring West Indies at Echuca, but was one of four district players named in the Victorian side.
Rochester’s David Lanyon, Graham Turner and David Major were selected in the team, with Major vice-captain.
Bubb, a rover for Kyabram in Goulburn Valley League, was a partner at law firm Abernethy Dawes Stewart at the time of his selection and a former Echuca South junior.
· Girgarre’s Jeff Turpin was named captain of the Kyabram District Cricket Association Junior Country Week team, with leg-spinning opening batter Matt McMaster-Smith as his deputy.
Andrew Hancock, Dallas Normington, Paul Ranson, Brett Archer and Mick Evans were also in the A-grade team, while Rob Auld was captain of the C-grade side – Steve Kerwin, Matt Carver, Glenn Rathbone, Andrew Tuhan and Gary McKenzie also in that squad.
· Seven new nominees were named for the Kyabram Apex 1984-85 Sportstar of the Year award, headlined by judo champions Mandy Roberts and Ian Nankivell.
They both won medals at the national championships, while 15-year-old hockey player Donna Williams was also recognised with a nomination for her selection in the state under-16 schoolgirls squad.
Footballers Nick Quirk, the winner of Kyabram’s senior best-and-fairest award in his first year at the level, was another nomination and was joined by motocross star Jason Kennedy, alongside athletics prodigy Denise Crilly.
1995
John Varcoe was named captain of the Kyabram District Cricket Association Bendigo Country Week team, with young Kyabram star Matt McMaster-Smith and Cooma veteran Alec “Lackie” Ranson also in the squad.
Grant Kemp was named as an opening batter, with all-rounders Brett Warburton and Peter Moar expected to play key roles in the competition.
At the Christmas break Cooma was on top of the A-grade ladder, ahead of Kyabram and Fire Brigade.
In junior cricket the stars of the day were Kyabram’s Adam Bauerle and Kane Norman, along with Peter Hunter, David Newman and Robbie Elborough.
· Peter White was named non-playing coach of Kyabram’s senior football team, having completed a thorough apprenticeship as coach of the Kyabram reserves team and district league clubs.
White was given the job after Chris Stuhldreier ended his coaching tenure and brought with him recent success after taking Merrigum to back-to-back premierships in 1986-87 – breaking a 29-year drought.
Kyabram hadn’t won a premiership since 1974 and White’s return to the club after several years “on the road” was being celebrated as he returned to where he played underage football.
· Stanhope Football Club president David Wilson announced the club’s new coaching panel, with David Dowell the senior coach and Brad Gale his assistant.
Wilson, the newly-appointed president, was the reserves coach, while Wayne Ryan had the top job at under-17 level.
Stanhope had picked up Tongala players Scott Hansen, Matt Walker and Scott Ohlsen in the off-season.
2005
Kyabram claimed its second successive Northern Rivers Junior Country Week title with a 21-run win against Shepparton, led by Daniel Hipwell’s unbeaten 65 and support from Alex Young and captain Rhys Bradley.
Sam Nelson, Matt Deledio and Ryan Butler also did their bit in the victory.
Earlier in the week Shannon Tucker and Nathan Beck were stars in the B-grade competition, while Jayce O’Neill was a standout in the under-14 division.
· Heather Barber was named as the new secretary of Kyabram Football Netball Club, the third successive female secretary of the club after following Judy Nelson and Penny Newman into the role.
A St Kilda supporter, she joined chair Peter Nelson and three vice-presidents – Les Dillon, Bernie Mangan and Lou Ciavarella – in the role.
Paul Jackson was financial director, with Dale Williams, Greg Cail, Bruce Croxford, Russell Morgan, John Lilford, Larna Napier, Kyra Clark, Ian Hilton and John Roberts making up the board.
Former chair Peter Lyon, secretary Penny Newman, Fay Glover and Barry Norton did not seek reappointment.
· Kyabram’s Mick Crombie, a trainer for the Bombers football team for 20 years, was officiating as a trainer-masseur at the World Deaf Olympics in Melbourne.
The volunteer role was mostly completed at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, with Mick looking after the swimmers and water polo players.
2015
Lancaster A-grade premiership coach Leanne Busch returned to the top job for the Kyabram District League club, while Jodie Rennie took on the B-grade job and Jo Backway continued as C-grade coach.
Rod O’Neill had taken on the coaching role for the under-17 and under-15 teams.
· Greg Shilling took home his 10th Kyabram Bowls Club singles championship, facing off against long-time mate and division one teammate David Cartwright.
Cartwright led by five before Shilling fought back to level the game at 21 apiece.
The deadlock remained until the final end when Shilling took the shot bowl and won the event.
· David Starling returned from the Victorian Inter-Regional Tennis Championships with three titles – winning the senior singles, doubles and mixed.
It was his third consecutive singles victory and he won the title 6-1 and 6-4 before combining with his Goulburn teammates to take the doubles titles.
