Former Kyabram stars Chris Salter and Bob Ferguson were among the best players on the ground for Lancaster as it beat Merrigum by 23 points in a KDL semi-final.

Centre half forward Col Flanagan kicked four goals and Noel Reddrop three, as ruckman Keith Argus and rover Kevin Bell also did their bit for the victory.
Sev Cortese kicked two goals for Merrigum, while Gary Vardy, Wayne Leppard and Greg Pell were the Bulldog's best.
Lancaster also won the reserve grade battle, where Gus Underwood was best on ground.
– A qualifying final showdown between rivals Kyabram and Tongala saw the Bombers kick five goals to none in the first term and hold off the fast finishing Blues to win by just four points.
There were 34 goals kicked in the game, Tongala kicking seven goals to two in the second term to square the ledger at half-time.
Peter Warburton kicked five for Kyabram and Trevor Coulstock three, while Vic Morris and Laurie Casey were the Bomber's best. Garth Honey kicked four goals for Tongala, Barry Nexhip three and Paul Briggs two.
Kyabram club president Nev Dickson collapsed during the tense final quarter in the stands at Deakin Reserve with what was thought to be a heart attack.
He was attended to by a nurse in the crowd and later treated by his doctor.
1989
Stanhope Navy was premier of the Kyabram Netball Association in 1989, with St Andrew’s taking the A special and A reserve titles.
Tongala won B-grade and B Reserve premier was Exies. The Stanhope team included Andrew King, Narelle King, Jan Cook, Cherrie Snelling, Tracey McArthur, Vanessa Snelling, Kate Palmer, Allison Coulston, Loretta Gardiner, Margaret McQueen and was coached by Ian Morgan.
It was Stanhope’s first A-grade win for 13 years, taken in a thrilling one goal grand final against a St Andrew’s team.
In junior netball Haslem Street White won the A-grade title and the team was made up of Fiona Armstrong, Kylie Busch, Tanya Busch, Kylie Halden, Wendy Gillon, Narelle Wheatley, Kelli Tranter, Melinda Shepherd, Lyndsey White and coach was Wendy Murley.
St Augustine’s won the B-grade title and the team consisted of Katie Goodrich, Kellie Gledhill, Angela Heard, Tanya Daugello, Tina Warde, Angelina Bowden, Rhonda Day, Anne Guiney and Sharon Warren (coach).
1999
Kyabram junior footballers Brendan White and Scott Hausler shared the Ken Keating Medal for the best-and-fairest player in the Shepparton Junior Football League’s under-16 competition.
The votes were counted after the grand finals and ended in a three-way tie, the Kyabram pair finishing equal with Notre Dame’s Shaun Makar. White is the son of Bombers senior coach Peter White and plays for Kyabram Bombers, while Hausler plays with Kyabram Wombats.
Girgarre was the unlikely winner of the 1989 Kyabram Netball Assocaition grand final, beating the more fancied Exies team in the play-off by 12 goals.
The jubilant Girgarre team consisted of Belinda Sefton-Rowston, Nikki Chapman, Tim Stewart, Nikki Carrol, Sharon Weeks, Janine Weeks, Debbie Weeks, Blynda McCready and Janelle Butler.
– Kyabram Netball Association Player of the Match awards were presented at a special event following the grand finals, Girgarre’s Belinda Sefton-Rowston taking the Section one award.
In Section two April Park won the award for her efforts on behalf of St Augustine’s, while the Section three winner was Rebecca West from Stanhope.
Hannah Wills from the Exies won the Section one season best-and-fairest award, while Sara Pettifer was the Section two winner for Exies and Belinda Trist won the Section three title.
2009
Julian Brennan was lining up for his 300th game of football with Tongala in a reserve grade preliminary final.
He started with the Under 12 team and apart from one season when he played in a grand final with Kyabram district league team Merrigum had played all his games with the Blues (183 seniors and 116 reserves).
He rated Brendon Parker, Russell Byrnes and Peter White as his best coaches, while Brad Campbell and Adam Brunt were rated among the best players he had seen.
– Kyabram relay runners Emily Lawson, Nikki Genio, Freya Findlay and Carlie Whitford beat all comers to claim the Gold medal at the Victorian All Schools Track Relay championships.
They finished five seconds (nearly 50 metres) ahead of their nearest competitors in the 4x200 metre relay event and two seconds in front in the medley final.
Three of the girls were members of the Haslem Street Primary School team that won back to back state titles in 2006-07. They were the only country and public school to participate in the championship.
– Alicia White was playing her 250th game for Tongala in the club’s first Murray league A grade netball grand final.
Also in the team were Lori Humphries, Abby Pettifer, Ash Mangan, Jacq Elborough, Tracey Reid, Kaitlyn Souter and Belinda Muir.
White started with the Tongala juniors and at 17 had made it into the top ranks. She won the Goulburn Valley league’s Wellman Family Medal for the best player in the league in 1997 and 2000.
She was also a member of the Tongala team that won its one and only GV A-grade title in 2002.
White also won the Warren Medal in the Kyabram district league while playing for Lancaster in 2006 when the club won the premiership.
The very next year she coached the team to a second successive grand final win.
Jackie Elborough and Michelle Mulholland were coaching Tongala in the grand final against Tocumwal.
CORRECTION
In last week’s edition of Plays of the Past, former Lancaster footballer Bruce Croxford’s name was incorrectly spelled. He was the winner of the 1979 Wade Medal. Apologies for the error.
