Arriving off the back of his time painting the silos in nearby Rochester, Jimmy Dvate has been commissioned by Cobram Arts for All to create a mural on the walls of Mivo Park’s toilet block.
Arts for All Cobram treasurer Julie Glance said the project has been in the pipeline for a couple of years.
Mr Dvate was selected from a pool of artists from across Victoria to lead the project, Ms Glance said.
“Jimmy ticked the most boxes,” she said.
Ms Glance said the location was ideal for a mural.
“It’s a prominent position in Cobram that attracts a lot of visitors,” she said.
“It’s a lovely park.”
While she could not comment on the specific design of the mural, Ms Glance did provide a clue.
The mural will depict “something with river scenes and native flora and fauna”, she said.
Dvate’s artwork is inspired by his appreciation of native Australian flora and fauna.
The project is expected to finish by December 1.
Moira Shire Council helped to fund the project with a $10,000 Community Strengthening Grant.
Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson said the council is proud to have supported the project through a Community Strengthening Grant and commended Arts for All on their work making the project a reality.
“It is exciting to see another public art project taking place in our shire. Jimmy Dvate is a renowned Australian artist who specialises in large scale public murals – we are thrilled that he will be adding to our vibrant arts community with a mural at Mivo Park, Cobram,” he said.
The project was also assisted by Bendigo Bank through its Community Enterprise Foundation and funds raised during Easter by the bank’s Cobram branch.
