Minerals council’s school camp commitment

Destruction of Rochester Secondary College camp equipment threatened to derail plans for the annual Year 8 camp, until the Minerals Council of Australia stepped in to save the day.

The MCA contributed 70 sleeping bags and some tents to the college, which has been based at the Bendigo Senior Secondary College in recent weeks.

Minerals Council of Australia Victorian division executive director James Sorahan said the region’s mining industry was happy to provide tents and sleeping bags to ensure the Year 8 students could go on the annual camp this year.

“We know that they were looking forward to it and after such a tough time with floods coming on the back of COVID,” Mr Sorahan said.

“The local mines wanted to help make sure the kids had the opportunity for a fun camp and the parents could stress less about how to make it happen.

“The camp will mean so much to the Year 8 students at this time.

“Rochester College students visited the Costerfield mine earlier this year and we have some locals working in the industry, so we are so happy to be able to help the Rochester community as a local industry.”

The students are all in Year 8 for their camp, which is on November 22 to 25 to Anglesea.
