Goulburn Valley Water has issued a firm warning to those contemplating unauthorised access to the Kyabram raw storage facility on McEwen Rd: break in, pay up.
For six months, GVW staff have been discovering cut fences several times a week, in addition to missing and damaged site signage.
GVW managing director Steve Capewell said staff were “disappointed” after continual break-ins, as they posed both a risk to operations at the plant and to the intruders’ safety.
“Illegally entering our site also creates time and financial costs for our staff to assess and repair damage to fences, which means time away from other day-to-day requirements,” Dr Capewell said.
Intruders found trespassing, intentionally damaging property or interfering with water operations can face fines of up to $230,000.
GVW will be increasing security at the Kyabram site and is working with Victoria Police to monitor and identify any illegal entry.
The public is being asked to be on the lookout and to report any intruders breaking into the Kyabram site.
Any suspicious activity, for example people loitering at fences or accessing a site outside normal business hours, should be reported to Victoria Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or call GVW’s 24/7 line on 1800 454 500.
