GVW managing director Dr Steve Capewell emphasised the potential havoc that extreme cold could wreak on water supply, given that most water meters and pipes are exposed to the elements.
"The majority of our water meters and pipes are above ground and open to the elements,“ he said.
“When temperatures plummet, the water within these meters and pipes can freeze, leading to a halt in your water supply and potential damage to pipes,.’’
While the meters are under GVW's ownership, most maintenance and protection falls on residents.
If a meter or the attached pipework is damaged or vandalised (regardless of the cause) the customer will be required to employ a plumber to undertake repairs.
Simple, cost-effective measures could prevent such water supply issues.
"As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,“ Dr Capewell said.
“If your meter freezes, you’ll likely experience a drastic drop in water pressure or even a complete loss of water,’’ he said.
To shield your water meter from the cold, people could cover it with everyday items like plastic tubs, cardboard boxes, blankets, or buckets when temperatures were expected to dip below zero.
