The motivated couple, along with just about every other fund raising organisation in Australia, had to adjust their approach to door knocking during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We couldn’t go onto people’s properties, so we had the fire brigade vehicles alongside the volunteers with the sirens going.
“Instead of walking into people’s yards we just walked up and down streets.
“When people hear the siren on Friday that was the signal to come out to their front gate and donate. It has worked very well and that is what we will be doing this year,” he said.
Mick, and son Kayne, got their appeal off to a perfect start when they combined for a nett 53 score while playing in the Parkland Golf Club’s Good Friday Appeal fundraising evening on Saturday.
In doing so they won the men’s competition in the 30-plus-year-old event.
“We had a few members playing in the charity event and others cooking the barbecue,” Mick said
The golf day raised $1278 toward the Kyabram appeal total, which was again expected to be around the $28,000 mark.
Mick said four appliances from Kyabram CFA and Kyabram SES would be used to signal the arrival of collectors in people’s streets.
Merrigum CFA will door knock their town and surrounding area, while Stanhope, Girgarre and Tongala do their own collection.
“Our goal is always to beat the previous year,” Mick said.
Last year’s appeal was bolstered by a blanket appeal at a Kyabram football match on Good Friday.
“We picked up another $1400 from the game and the footy club donated from the gate after that event,” he said.
This year Kyabram’s first game is on Saturday, April 8 at Rochester.
The Kyabram fire station will be open from 9am until 5pm for those wanting to call into the station and make a donation. For those wanting to phone through a donation for collection this can be done by calling the station on 58521256 on Good Friday only.
