“They’re settling in very well, a few tears, but that’s part and parcel of getting used to the new environment,” Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 teacher Nick Gibbs said.
“All three very different personalities: very quiet, very loud and very stubborn.”
It was hard for them to say goodbye to mum on their first day, but the preps have already forgotten the sadness of leaving the nest and were clambering all over the play equipment while Mr Gibbs wrangled them for a photo.
The boys were thrilled to have their photo taken, because it meant extra time in the playground, which is their favourite part of school.
They had a few transition weeks last year, coming in for half days and acclimatising to a school environment, and now the three new kids are completely at ease.
They’re focusing on the basics, getting used to a school routine, learning their letters and numbers, learning to hold a pencil properly and preparing for their educational journey. And the boys are already on the ball, with Matthew Godwin confidently spelling his name without any hesitation or mistakes.
There are no Grade 1 students this year, so the preps are in with the Grade 2 kids. This gives the preps role models to help them settle in to school life, and the older children are looking out for the youngsters, mentoring them and setting a good example.
There are 26 children at Girgarre Primary School and Mr Gibbs says there is a great teacher to student ratio so the kids get lots of individual educational attention.
It’s an inclusive environment for the students at Girgarre Primary School. At lunchtime, the entire student population gathers and socialises together, with the younger kids mingling with the older ones.
“Girgarre is a good school — small numbers, good teacher to student ratios, good facilities, playgrounds are excellent and plenty of space,” Mr Gibbs said.
