Firefighters from the Tocumwal and Finley Fire + Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service were called to a Kelly St home in Tocumwal about 5.30pm Saturday.
Arriving on scene first, Tocumwal RFS firefighters noticed the garage was alight and that the home’s occupants had already evacuated.
From the garage, the fire spread through the roof and into the back rooms of the house itself, eventually spreading to the kitchen and remaining rooms of the home.
There were no injuries, due in part to the quick thinking of the occupants and their smoke alarm system.
The fire itself was under control quickly, although firefighters remained for at least another hour to work on hot spots.
Tocumwal Fire + Rescue Captain Ian Desailly was proud of how quickly everyone acted and ensured the safety of those involved.
“The brigades worked really well to get the fire under control, having that done in 20 minutes or so,” he said.
“There were no injuries. The occupants had left the house before it getting completely out of control.”
Capt Desailly spoke to the importance of checking smoke alarms around the house, and how “smoke alarms save lives”.
The home was gutted by flames, with the damage stretching through three separate rooms in the house, the kitchen and the garage where the fire is believed to have started.
A cause of the blaze has not been confirmed.
Murray River Police District officers are investigating.
