The Ky Bandits are keen to improve on last year’s performance in their 24-hour ride as part of the RACV Energy Breakthrough challenge at Maryborough this weekend.
The team of six consisting of Year 120s and 11s from Ky P-12 College, are looking forward to beating their previous best distance of 585km.
“Last year we were in the top 50 out of about 100 teams, so we’re definitely looking to do better than that this year,” rider Brad John said.
The Human-Powered Vehicles competition is part of the Energy Breakthrough program and has many different events and entry levels for participants aged nine to 19.
The program encourages participants to use the latest technology while also considering its impact on the environment.
One of the parents, Mark Noonan said the teamwork shown between the boys last year was incredible and would expect it to be the same this year.

Ky P-12 College campus on Dawes Rd closing
The Dawes Rd campus of Kyabram P-12 College will close next year.
Parents were informed of the school council’s decision in a letter from school principal Stuart Bott this week.
“This decision has not been taken lightly with feedback being gathered over the past few months from current and past parents, students and staff,” he said.
The closure of the campus will mean the whole student population will be together on the main Fischer St campus next year.
Mr Bott said the Year 9 program would continue to be maintained by placing students in rooms that were located in the same building.

Not tolerating men’s violence
Some of the region’s most prominent men will speak at an official White Ribbon Day event expected to attract more than 100 people next week.
Campaspe Shie chief executive Keith Bailie, who this year became a Whie Ribbon ambassador will host the free “Shine a Light” event at Moama Bowling Club on November 25 that will feature Campaspe police Inspector Paul Margetts, Echuca Regional Health’s Craig Frew and John McPherson, a partner in Bendigo law firm Arnold Dalas McPherson, also a White Ribbon ambassador.
The event will include a screening of local documentary-maker Shaun Burke’s moving short film Weathered, a panel discussion and a “group swearing” of the White Ribbon oath.
Mr Ballie said the even, the fire of its kind in the region, was designed to raise awareness about men’s violence against women and children and the profile of the White Ribbon campaign.
“We know it is one of the more serious problems facing our community, with approximately one restraining order per day and two charged laid per week related to intimate partner violence.”

Crow a commissioner?
The strong prospect that there will be some local content in the commissioners for the new Campaspe municipality is heartening to the Kyabram-Deakin-Waranga area.
Former Kyabram councillor and SKYROD chairman, Mr Doug Crow, has been widely tipped around the Shepparton and Kyabram area as one of the three commissioners.
It is believed the commissioners were confirmed by state Cabinet early this week and were to appear in the Government Gazette yesterday.
Mr Crow has lived in the Kyabram area most of his life and been involved with many organisations of a regional nature through his council activities, and travel the new municipality widely in his work.
With a genuine and personal interest in many local spheres of life, people in Kyabram and district who have lost their councillors as contacts would have confidence in being able to approach Mr Crow.

Ken there for first – and last
It was a nostalgic night last week when the Kyabram Town Council met for the last time.
And one person who attended the meeting who had good reason to feel a little more sentimental than any more present was Ken King.
Ken was a member for the original Kyabram Borough Council when it was formed in 1954.
Ken was one of Kyabram’s longest serving councillors and regarded by many as one of its most astute.

Ky family opens new supermarket
It pleases me to see a district family with the initiative to launch such an enterprise, Country Party Leader Mr Peter Ross-Edwards said on Wednesday.
He was opening King's Tuckerbag store in Mainstreet, Mooroopna.
Mr Ross-Edwards said it was usually the chain store involved in this type of venture, and it was very nice to see the King family of Kyabram “throwing down the gauntlet.”
He was also very pleased to know that the work on the building had been carried out by local tradesmen.
Declaring the magnificent store open, Mr Ross-Edwards told the large crowd of shoppers, “If you want this venture in this town, it’s up to you to support it.”
