Kyabram was on top of the ladder after 11 rounds of the Goulburn Valley league season, on the back of a 34-point win against eighth ranked Mooroopna.

Geoff Cox was best on ground and Neil Hindson kicked four goals in the victory, while two goals from Greg Caldwell and the ruck domination of Ron Stone contributed to the result.
Cox was playing in his 150th match, but was still a way behind father Wilf and brothers, Brian and Ray.
Wilf Cox was the 1934 Morrison Medallist and played 340 games across 21 seasons. Both Brian and Ray were 200 game players for the Bombers — making it about 900 games for the family.
Tongala caused a boilover by beating third ranked Euroa by seven points, despite the Blues being ninth on the ladder with just four wins for the season.
Coach Bob Allison was forced to sit on the bench as a result of Lindsay Reidell being married and the unavailability of Garth Honey, Doug Cox, Geoff Price, Ron Travaskis Graeme Murphy and Geoff Shinfield.
Neal WIlliams and Gary Beavis were stars for the Blues, along with defenders David Osment and Daryl Reid.
Stanhope suffered at the hand of “Dynamic’’ Des Campbell and ”Tricky’’ Trevor Eddy when they lost to Shepparton United by 49 points.
Eddy kicked 10 goals (88 from 12 games) and Campbell was a star at centre half forward as the second ranked GVL team dominated its opponent.
For Stanhope Ken Chapman was its best player, with support from Peter Flanagan, John Murphy, Gary Maxwell and “Butch’’ Auld.
– Kyabram fisherman Raff Ludemann and Brian Quirk combined with Torrumbarry’s Ken Colvin to catch seven cod and 50 yellow belly on a Darling River fishing trip at Willcania.
Brian and Raff’s biggest catch was a 15.7 kilogram cod.
– St Augustine’s player John Cortese towers over his Rochester opponent John Leahy during a match in the catholic schools sports carnival at Kyabram.
John Leahy was 25 centimetres shorter than his opponent, both 16 years of age.
– A representative Kyabram netball team played the state side which included Sue Crow, Margaret Casey, Norma Sefton, Marie Bazeley, Chris Pell, Wendy Howell, Pam Jephcott and Bev Cowie.
1999
Giant Kyabram district league goalkickers Danny Irwin (Rushworth) and Shane Loveless (Nagambie) led the goalkicking with 63 and 62 goals respectively after 12 games.
Loveless and Irwin had just kicked 11 goals each in their teams contrasting wins, Nagambie 231-14 against Girgarre and Rushworth by two points against Lancaster.
Girgarre’s best were Jeff Turpin, Brett Scoble, David Metcalf and Daniel Nicholson, while for the Wombats Hearn kicked four goals, Corey Carver three and Andrew Thomas was the team’s best player.
Stanhope was second on the ladder, Leigh Haw had just kicked seven goals and Glen Hodgins was the Lions best player.
Lancaster pair Tim Hancock and Scott Hearn were both high on the goalkicking table.
– Junior girls premiers of the Kyabram junior basketball competition were Lightning Bolts, the team made up of Nicole Croxford, Sara Pettifer, Rebecca Harris, Rachel Smith, Lauren Parker and Emma Kennon.
The boys junior premiers were Saints, the team included Jason Morgan, Mark Ciavarella, Ross De Pasquale, Andrew Kent and Brady Cooper.
Wayne Deledio was coach of the Under 12 premier team, which included Matt Hetherington, Matt Deledio, Jon withall, Alexander Hindson, Louise Owen, Ashlin Dillon, Bretty Deledio and Hannah Ryan.
– Phil Binion and Grant Wade both played their 300th club game for Lancaster, 33-year-old Wade having played 96 games at Under 17 level before moving into senior ranks (including a 1983 premiership).
Binion also started in the thirds and the 40-year-old had played most of his games at reserve grade level.
He was captain of the team and a previous winner of the Kyabram district league’s reserve grade best and fairest award.
– Netballing sisters Trudy and Tella Tonkin both chalked up their 100th games for the club in a win against Seymour.
Kyabram was one win outside the top six after 13 games, having just beaten Seymour by 60 points on the back of eight goals from Troy Mitchell (43 for the season).
2010
Four Lancaster netballers had all chalked up milestones during the season, Fiona Barnett reaching 200 club games.
She had sideline support from vice president husband Justin and children, Jackson, Charlie and Oliver.
Claire Grills reached 150 club games, among those league medal wins in 2003 and 2006.
Her husband Steve was the current coach of the Wombats reserves, while their four girls Julia, Eliza, Kate and Rose were all closely following their mother.
The pair joined recent 300 game stalwart Sandy Carver and, at the other end of the spetrum, 100 gamer Hayley Russ who had followed her boyfriend Rikki Busch to the club.
– Tony “Rusty’’ McDonnell had earned selection in the Victorian team to contest the EJ Whitten Legends Game against the All Stars at the then Etihad Stadium.
After the game Rusty was being joined by his three sons, Sean, 17, Ben, 12, and 10-year-old Will in the change rooms to rub shoulders with some of the game’s greats - including Sam Newman, Anthony Koutoufides, Glenn Archer, Mick Martyn, Tony Liberatore and David Neitz.
The 46-year-old Kyabram legend broke Mick Souter’s GVL games record before joining Lancaster as a premiership coach and was following in the footsteps of goalkicking legend Perry Meka — who also played in the Legends Game.
– Free Press legend Gus Underwood received the R.F. Merriman Service Medallion for his service to Victorian Country Cricket.
He had an unbroken 54 year association with the Kyabram association as a player and administrator, recently having stepped down as president after a 24 year stint.
He played his first game at age 12 and last as a 53-year-old.
