The fire in grassland behind Prospect Cres burnt about two hectares of grass, but it could have been much worse with the fire line right against the back fence of a group of houses.
Firefighters were called shortly after 12.30pm, with two Shepparton Fire Rescue Victoria tankers and a CFA tanker each from Shepparton, Mooroopna, Kialla and Shepparton East brigades springing into action to protect the houses.
Shepparton FRV senior station officer Scott Walters said the fire took about 20 minutes to bring under control.
While the houses bordered the three sides of the grass reserve, the fourth side was the Shepparton Airport.
Neighbours told firefighters the grassland had only just been mown in recent days, with this no doubt helping enormously in stopping the fire from spreading further.
The fire did not do any damage to the nearby houses or their yards.
Mr Walters said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
