Staff and past and present students recently gathered to celebrate Echuca Central Kindergarten’s 50th anniversary.

On Sunday, October 13, about 100 people joined in the celebrations, including old and new students and educators as well as community members.
Among the crowd was Jeanne Aitken, the first teacher, and other past educators such as Trish Marchetti, Annele Brown, Tracey Norris and Shirley Burrell.

Echuca Central educator Karen Lucke said the anniversary was a nod to the history of the kinder as well as a reflection of the community’s commitment.
“The 50th anniversary was not only a celebration of the kindergarten’s rich history but also a testament to the community’s commitment to early childhood education,” she said.
“It was a day filled with joy, connection and gratitude.”
The day opened with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony performed by Uncle Rick Ronnan.

Shirley Burrell, a past president of the parent advisory committee (PAG) and educator, also reflected on the kinder’s many changes.

The rest of the day was full of fun for families with face painting, an animal nursery, raffles and a guessing game with lollies in jars.
The current students worked hard on some artworks in the lead up to the event, which were on display.
All current students created artworks in celebration of the milestone.
Guests had a chance to buy the children’s masterpieces during a silent auction.
There were no empty stomachs on the day as guests enjoyed the birthday cake made by Fuzion, treats from Lucy Lou Cookie Addiction and coffee from the Echuca Moama Coffee Roasters.
All raffle prizes were donated by local businesses.
