Christmas cheer reaches disadvantaged Ky families

The Kyabram Salvation Army will be making Christmas special for more than 40 local families this year thanks to the community support for the annual Christmas Cheer program.

Salvation Army captain Jacky Targett, who is leaving her post at Kyabram Salvos at the end of the year, is going out with a bang, providing a record number of disadvantaged families with presents for children, food vouchers and other goodies to make sure December 25 is special for all.

Vickie Taylor’s family is just one of many who will be receiving a care package from the Salvos’ Christmas Cheer this year.

And she is grateful for all the support she and her family have received over the years.

Ms Taylor has been battling brain cancer while taking care of her two grandchildren and said Christmas time has always been a tough period to make ends meet.

“(Christmas Cheer) is not just a program — it’s friendship,” Ms Taylor said.

“What (Jacky) has done to change my life, my world and my grandchildren has been amazing.

“We can’t thank the community enough for all of their generosity this season.”

While applications for Christmas Cheer have closed, The Salvation Army are still taking donations, and as the saying goes — the more the merrier.

Give the gift of Christmas cheer to a struggling community member by donating toys, food vouchers or money by dropping into the Kyabram Salvation Army thrift store on Bradley St before Thursday, December 19.
