Estelle Close’s pic of the week is of Wallace Hut, Falls Creek. Built in 1889, it is the oldest surviving hut in the Victorian Alps.

Fight will go on
A battle has been lost, but the word around town is that the war has only just started.

The Kyabram community’s fight to prevent Campaspe Shire Council from proceeding with its proposed $3.2 million changes to the 40-year-old Kyabram Wilf Cox Pavilion will continue.
Far more appropriate and cost-effective alternatives will be the theme of the fight.
Community members want common sense to prevail and the Wilf Cox facility needs better amenities for all its sporting teams, particularly for its female participants, and will fight tooth and nail to achieve this outcome.
Noisy day
Residents in the south-west area of Kyabram could have been excused for thinking World War III was erupting on Wednesday last week.
With gas cylinders exploding in the fire at Kyabram Wreckers on Everard Rd and belching black smoke high into the heavens accompanied by a roaring sound, helicopters buzzing overhead, and the heavy land clearing equipment going full bore at Greens residential development on the corner of McEwen and South Boundary Rds, the noise was pretty loud and intimidating in some spots.
The bottom line and bonus was that no-one came to grief in all the noise and confusion.
Rail finally falls — sort of
It has rained. Not exactly a drenching rain, though.
A paltry 0.8mm was recorded Saturday into Sunday of last weekend.
It took Ky’s February rainfall to 1.4mm, which is well below the average of 26mm.
And with only 18mm recorded for January, Kyabram has received just 19.4mm this year so far.
Opera by the silos
Resilient Rochester is slowly recovering from the devastating floods of 2022 and is about to launch another a community event.
Artists from Opera Australia are booked to perform under the town’s well-known murals thanks to the Rochester Rotary Club.
Songs at the Silos will include Opera Australia vocalists Michael Lapina, Karen Van Spall, Adam Miller and Eleanor Blythman, plus a special performance from local talent Evie Scoble.
The event is being held on Saturday, March 8, at the Rochester GrainCorp silos, starting at 6pm.
Have you ever had an association with the Coleambally Football Netball Club?
Better still, have you any photos from your time with the club.
The club’s 60-year milestone celebrations are on Saturday, June 14, but any memorabilia is required by March 15 to meet printing deadlines.
Anyone who can assist can contact Tom Mannes on 0474 224 940.
Lights for park
Shepparton’s Victoria Lake skate park is to light up.
Construction has already started on installing new lighting at the park with work, being carried out by Watters Electrical, expected to be completed by the end of March into early April.
Push to demolish bridge
The Strathbogie community is supporting a push to demolish Chinamans Bridge — not to be confused with the historic Kirwans Bridge.
Some 32 submissions were received during the public notice period for the demolition of the bridge, a move also supported by Heritage Victoria.
The bridge suffered extensive damage in the 2022 October floods.
Expansion plans
Berrigan Shire has released plans to cater for future growth of Tocumwal and its central business district.
A series of spaces for new commercial buildings, improved car parking facilities and greenscapes are in the plans, along with options of two entrance roads to the town beach area.
Square dinkum
G’day.
I am in the process of writing a book about drinking beer …. it is taking quite a while.
