Paul Newman has confirmed he has a date with a knee specialist early in February for partial surgery and has been advised his days of playing sport are all but over.
Newman has been a dominant Kyabram footballer, coach, as well as an elite cricketer for the past 25 years in Kyabram and district and is one of the most electrifying sportsmen the town has produced.

Kyabram has lost some true stalwarts in recent weeks.
Former Kyabram newsagent Les Grills’ passing has deprived the town of a true gentleman who would think nothing about going out of his way to lend a helping hand to help out anyone in need. Just a great human being.
Marg Williams has been another huge loss to the town.
She was also community-minded, who as secretary of the Kyabram AH&P Society played a pivotal role for many years ensuring successful Kyabram agricultural shows and the famous Kyabram rodeos.
Marg also had stints with the Lancaster CWA (Sheridan) and the Kyabram Historical Society.
Another huge loss of late was Harry Castles, raised in Kyabram and a successful Echuca businessman.
Harry loved his sport and his passion for football led him to take over the presidency of Kyabram Football Club in 1975 and initiate the Bombers’ drought-breaking GVL premiership win under coach Peter Lyon.

Kyabram Lions Club members will be rebaiting fruit fly traps this Saturday, December 14.
Lions members will be outside the Salvation Army Op Shop in Bradley St. from 9am to midday.
The rebaiting cost is $6 a trap and new traps will be available at a cost of $16.

Rain over the past week or two hasn’t been appreciated by crop growers, orchadists or hay makers.
Since November Kyabram Weather Station has recorded 74mm of rain, 73.2mm of that registered in November, the most for this month since 2010 when 123mm fell.
Only five Novembers since records were first taken in 1887 have produced 100mm of rain or more with 1887 in fact holding the record with a 142mm.
Kyabram’s yearly total now stands at 436mm, just below the average of 450mm.
When the mercury hit 37.8°C on Saturday, November 23 it was the hottest day experienced in Kyabram since February 4 when it climbed to 39.7°C.

An (ageing) group of district sportsmen were pleasantly surprised last week at a Christmas gathering at Kyabram’s Hurley’s Hotel.
Just happened one of them, Tatura’s football media personality “JR” Ryan was celebrating his 76th birthday that day, but was keeping it well under wraps.
But partygoers at another birthday party going on at the same time in the pub got wind of it and thought JR’s birthday milestone should also be recognised.
They presented JR and his group with cakes and desserts along with a burst of ‘‘Happy Birthday JR’’ which was greatly appreciated by JR and his gang of mates.
One of the group, Tatura’s Angie Serra even remarked the thoughtful act had helped him to restore his faith in human nature.

A 63-year-olld man was killed when he ran off the Murray Valley Hwy and hit tree near Nathalia at about 6.30pm on Saturday, November 30.
Investigations are continuing and anyone who witnessed the crash or with footage of it is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

The award-winning Strathmerton Hot Bread Bakery has changed ownership after 36 years.
The popular stopover on the Murray Valley Hwy east of Cobram is now being operated by Van Huynh and his wife Van Bui, who have taken over from previous owners Ray and Glenda Kelly, who were at the bakery from day one, 36 years ago and gave many young locals a start to their working lives over the years.

A man died on Tuesday (December 3) of last week when a tree branch fell on the car he was driving.
The accident happened at the Loop Track camping area at Yarrawonga about 7.10pm during a wild storm.
A teenage boy and a woman who were also travelling in the vehicle were also hospitalised for observation and the exact circumstances of the incident is still being investigated.
