No horsing around
Could Murray River Council’s Citizen of the Year be ... a horse?

Yes, a horse. A 26-year-old mare called Molly.
She’s been nominated for the prestigious award, mainly through her efforts in last year’s floods when she was used by her owner, Danielle Garden, to gather information on water levels in the Moama area, which earned her an army of online followers.
But Molly has been far from a one-trick pony.
Since her initial exposure, the former racehorse and kart horse has been a drawcard at Fashion on the Field events at race meetings at Echuca and Gunbower, actually winning a sash at the Gunbower meeting.
She’s even been an extra in a locally produced film Loki and Me.
She’s even been through bottle and coffee shops and footy parties.
According to her owner, Molly is a real social butterfly, who just loves attention.
Molly’s adventures can be followed on Facebook.
Just type in Molly The Horse and head to her page.
Dry in Ky
Kyabram has received just 2.4mm of rain so far for December, which has a long-term average of 33mm.
Kyabram has now received 400mm for the year, which is 50mm less than the long-term yearly average.
Kyabram has actually experienced its wettest and driest December in the past five years.
2017 was the wettest December on record, with 110mm recorded, while the driest December was in 2019, with only 0.2mm.
Fimmel in AACTA mix
Lockington’s Travis Fimmel is in the running for a prestigious Australian Academy of Cinema and Television award.
He is among six nominations for the award, which has been running annually since 1958.
In the production, Fimmel plays Detective James Cormack, who follows a cold case murder when the opening of a time capsule makes a startling revelation.
Fimmel has earned rave notices for his role in the production, filmed in Queensland’s Whitsundays region.
Winners will be announced and presented in February on the Gold Coast.
Coup for production
A production to be held by the Echuca-Moama Theatre Company in the new year has scored a coup.
Award-winning Shepparton thespian Sean O’Brien is joining Tamara Cadd and Mark Thomson for the production Into The Woods, which intertwines the plots of several brothers Grimm Fairytales and explores the consequences of the characters’ wishes and requests.
Super shot
Stormy weather is always good for a vivid camera shot and there have been plenty of opportunities recently to get one.
Last week, up at Coleambally, local Teagan Matthews came up with stunning shot during a storm.
She was actually heading into town after the storm had caused a power outage and tried her luck at the Kidman Way intersection and hit the jackpot.
Ky connection to hotel
The Daylesford hotel where five people were killed by a runaway car in November has a Kyabram connection.
The pub where the tragedy occurred is run by Cameron Stone, son of former Kyabram chemist Ron Stone and his wife Jenny.
Square Dinkum
G’day
T’was the night before Christmas in Kyabram – you know.
Where the spirit of Christmas was alive and on show.
Asleep in their houses were the children of Ky,
Dreaming of Santa and will he come by.
Pillow slips hanging at the foot of their beds,
Good thoughts of Christmas alive in their heads.
When all of a sudden from the still of the night,
There came such a ruckus it gave them a fright.
From across the sky like a shot from a gun,
A worn-out old ute coming down on a run.
The driver was waving and shouting at will.
Six big kangaroos he drove with great skill.
He yelled to the roos to set down to the right,
‘There’s many more miles for you boys tonight.’
The driver, in thongs and a shirt that was red,
Had a worn out Akubra on top of his head.
He stepped from the ute, he was really a sight,
His beard, so long — and curly — and white.
He burst into the houses and children awoke,
All so astonished, not one of them spoke.
He filled pillow slips with such presents galore,
That no-one could think of a single thing more.
When the children recovered the use of their jaws.
They asked in a whisper, ‘Are you Santa Claus?’
‘Am I the real Santa, well, what do you think?’
And he smiled as he gave a mysterious wink.
He climbed into the ute, looking back with a call,
To the folks of Kyabram, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.
