Both homeowners and landlords across the state have invested in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems as well as solar batteries for their properties.
To record the state’s progress, the Solar Homes Program has been tracking the installation of solar batteries and solar panels in Victoria, noting the system suppliers performing installations as well as whether the solutions have been secured by landlords or owner occupiers across residential properties.
We’ll be presenting the Program’s extensive findings here in an easily digestible, month-by-month format, before providing a full overview for solar installations across Victoria in the entirety of 2024.
2024 Solar Homes Program Overview
Sample Record – January 2024
Below is a sample graph of how every month’s performance numbers will be recorded.
As per the Solar Home Program’s own reporting method, we’ll be breaking down total solar installations into these four main categories:
- Battery (Owner Occupier)
- Hot Water (Owner Occupier)
- Solar PV (Landlord)
- Solar PV (Owner Occupier)
In January, there were a total of 5185 solar installation jobs recorded by a total of 609 solar retailers across Victoria.
Of those 5185 solar installation jobs:
- 311 were for solar batteries (by owner occupiers),
- 2023 for solar hot water systems (by owner occupiers),
- 60 for solar PV systems (by landlords), and
- 2791 solar PV systems installed for owner occupiers.
That means over 53% of total solar installations in Victoria for January 2024, were for owner occupier solar PV systems.
Total Solar Installations Recorded Across 2024
By using this reporting system for every month, we can compile both the total solar installations per month as well as the breakdown across all four installation categories.
Here are the total solar installations by category recorded from January - November, 2024:
There were a total of 77732 solar installations recorded by the Solar Homes Program across
Victoria (between January 2024 - November 2024). Of these 77732 solar installations, over 54% were solar photovoltaic systems installed by an owner occupier.
Contrastingly, less than 1% of all system installations across 2024 were for landlords.
Under the Victorian Solar Rebates program, landlords are also eligible to receive rebates towards the installation of solar panels for their investment properties.
It’s likely that disturbing tenants at tenanted properties is a barrier for Victorian landlords in installing solar PV solutions.
Total Victorian Solar Suppliers Across 2024
Another interesting takeaway from this year’s Solar Homes Program reporting is that the total number of solar suppliers actually fluctuated from month to month.
This could be attributed to suppliers failing to record any installations within particular calendar periods, as well as due to the formation of new supplier enterprises.
Here are the total solar supplier numbers from January - November, 2024, as reported by the Solar Homes Program:
The total number of solar suppliers operating in Victoria increased over 2024 from 609 recorded suppliers in January, to 740 recorded suppliers in November.
This is an increase of 21.5%.
With upwards of 700 solar suppliers to select from as well as Victoria’s solar rebates, consumers looking to invest in solar PV solutions in 2025 are advised to secure solar quotes from numerous reputable suppliers before making their final decisions.
Key Takeaways from the 2024 Solar Homes Program Report
Solar PV Systems & Solar Hot Water are the Most Popular Investments
The majority of solar installations recorded in Victoria from January - November, 2024, were either solar PV panel systems or solar hot water systems – both for owner occupiers.
- 54.3% (42234) – Solar PV (Owner Occupier)
- 41.4% (32181) – Hot Water (Owner Occupier)
- 3.5% (2726) – Battery (Owner Occupier)
- 0.8% (591) – Solar PV (Landlord)
Victoria’s Growing Solar Supplier Network
Victoria’s solar market has undoubtedly experienced immense growth over the past 12 months, with upwards of 700 solar suppliers now occupying the market, and a whopping 42825 solar PV systems installed across both owner occupied and leased properties.
Preventing ~80,000 Tonnes of CO2 from Entering the Atmosphere
According to estimates from Solar Market, the average solar PV system in Australia will prevent an average of 1.75-2.05 tonnes of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere every year.
So across the 42845 PV systems installed in Victoria over 2024, Victorians are aiding in preventing anywhere between 74943.75 – 87791.25 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere in just 2025 alone.
We can keep this momentum going by continuing to invest in solar energy and solar PV solutions over 2025.
Supporting 2025 Solar Program Performance in Victoria
The performance metrics recorded by the Solar Homes Program across 2024 are promising for Victoria, showcasing that the state is on track to reach its Sustainable Development Goals in the leadup to 2030.
Both the Victorian State Government as well as local councils are also continuing to support Victorian residents and business owners in charting their own solar investments across 2025, with councils offering their own energy saving initiatives and offers.
If your Victorian household is yet to make the shift to solar energy, then 2025 is your year to join the 40000+ other households who have taken the plunge in 2024.
Speak with your local solar suppliers to get the ball rolling on a solar PV installation for your home, and join the hundreds of thousands of Victorian residents who are contributing to Australia’s record-breaking rooftop solar gains.
