Since its launch in 1991, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence has grown into a global movement.

Held annually from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day, the campaign unites communities worldwide to raise awareness and advocate for change every year.
This year’s theme, ‘Safe. Everywhere. Always.’, calls on individuals and workplaces to actively support efforts to eliminate gender-based violence.
Activities range from fundraising to completing personal challenges of 30, 60, or 100 kilometres of running, walking or swimming.
In Strathbogie Shire, the focus is on bringing the community together with a Walk Against Family Violence at Nagambie Lake on Saturday, December 7. Starting at 8am at Buckley Park, participants will join the Nagambie Lake parkrun group to walk the 2.5km lake track.
“This is an international campaign aimed at fostering healthy, equal relationships and promoting equality across all areas, including workplaces and local sporting clubs,” Strathbogie Shire Mayor Claire Ewart-Kennedy said.
“We all have a role to play in changing attitudes, behaviours and the systems, policies and processes that allow violence to continue,” Cr Ewart-Kennedy said.
“Councillors will be joining the Nagambie Lake parkrun group of runners and walkers at 7.45am for an 8am (start) ... and participants are encouraged to wear orange.”
Participants will receive a coffee and cake voucher, redeemable at the GoNagambie Lakeside Market, to use after completing the track.
Why orange?
Orange, the campaign’s official colour, symbolises hope for a brighter future, one free from violence against women and children. Wearing orange while participating in events helps spread awareness on social media.
Strathbogie Shire Council isn’t the only local council stepping up. Towns such as Cobram and Shepparton are organising their own events, including community walks and informative activities.
Cobram’s walk on December 1 will run from 9am to 11am at Federation Park. Participants can enjoy free egg and bacon rolls afterwards, a coffee van will be present on the day and stalls will be hosted by service providers.
Meanwhile, Shepparton’s walk will take place on December 8, from noon to 2.30pm at Victoria Park Lake. The family-friendly event will feature activities for children and information from local agencies.
A free community forum will take place on Friday, November 29, between 11am and 2pm at Shepparton Art Museum, with Goulburn Valley agencies present on the day. Victoria Police Senior Sergeant Rachel Walsh, the family violence training officer for the Shepparton, Benalla and Mitchell police service areas, will deliver the keynote address.
A light lunch will be provided, and tickets are limited.

With so many ways to get involved, the 16 Days of Activism, which was started in the United States by Rutgers University’s Center for Women’s Global Leadership, provides an opportunity for everyone to make a difference.
Whether you walk, wear orange, or simply start a conversation, your actions help pave the way for a safer, more respectful future for all.
