Darren is now the town’s SES Unit Controller, his two daughters are volunteers, and his wife Emma is a staff member.
“I loved growing up in Rutherglen; I’ve been here for 45 years and it’s great to be part of a small community,” Darren said.
“I wanted to help the community, and the SES was pretty desperate for members.”
Popularly known as Tracker, and in his second year as controller, Darren enjoys the challenges of the SES Controller’s role.
He says it’s a great place to meet people and to learn life-saving skills while helping the community.
Daughters, Chloe and Sarah have been SES volunteers for two years and Emma started this year in administration.
Rutherglen’s much decorated Irene Cracknell OAM ESM was previously unit controller and thinks very highly of the Trevaskis family.
“They are an absolutely beautiful family, just nice people,” Mrs Cracknell said.
“Darren does so much in the community, in mega organisations; he doesn’t stop and his family is so supportive.
“I’m extremely grateful to him for taking over from me.”
Formerly a concreter, Darren is now a commercial support officer and truckdriver with farm warehouse AGnVET in Rutherglen.
“I love being out in the open and on the road delivering supplies to farmers and catching up with all the locals in the shop,” he said.
For more than 15 years, he has volunteered for the Rutherglen football team, beginning as a runner for the seconds footy team then becoming the team's manager.
He joined the committee back in 2014 helping with sponsorship and day-to-day jobs around the ground, and every month he helps the Rutherglen Lions Club at the farmers market with their barbecue.
“A highlight at the football netball club was in 2017 when the club raised $93,000 for Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre making it a special year for the club,” Darren said.
“I was thrilled to be named Club Person in 2018.”
“I still enjoy watching local games and helping on the barbecue or in the bar when needed.”
Rutherglen Football Netball Club president Greg Lumby said “Tracker’s an absolute ripper!”.
“Whenever you want a job done and you ask him, we know it will be done, he’ll go through with it.”
