Because, not only are there family bragging rights and vital series points on the line, there's also the matter of a free meal.
Friday night's Sydney Smash will likely determine which of the Sixers and Thunder earns a double chance in the BBL finals after the latter confirmed their spot in the final four with Monday's defeat of Perth.
But for Joel and Oliver Davies, the loser will also have to shout their brother McDonalds on the way home.
Started earlier this summer when an NBA wager between the brothers rolled into the Sixers' last-ball win over the Thunder, the brotherly bet is now locked in.
"We'll get Maccas on the way home now whenever we play each other. It's a bit of a tradition," Joel said.
"That'll be the go."
Joel denies his brother's claim that his meal order is too large, amounting to $21.35 and involves almost everything except the meat being taken off the burger.

He also rejects suggestions the Big Bash mostly differs from the backyard, because as the younger brother, he can't run inside and complain to his parents.
"I swear that used to happen," Ollie said.
"We'd come home from school and we'd come out in the back and we'd tape up a brand-new tennis ball and I'd come off the long run.
"When I used to bowl pretty quick back in the day. I'd bounce Joel a few times and then he'd drop the bat and go run inside and, and have a little whinge."
Beneath it all, though, there is a genuine brotherly connection.
The Manly products grew up with a three-year difference between them, and initially played together at the Thunder in Joel's debut 2022-23 season.
They didn't feature in any matches against each other last summer, while Ollie hit seven runs in six balls against Joel in their match up earlier in the summer.
"It was a pretty weird experience," Ollie said.
"It was just surreal because I didn't want to get out to him, but I also kind of didn't want to bump him either because I felt bad.
"I was down the other end when Cameron Bancroft hit him for six. Obviously with my Thunder cap on when balls went in the air, It was like 'go for six'.
"And then I had my Davies cap on and it was 'oh, if he gets caught, hopefully someone else can score runs'.
"I wanted to see him do well and us win the game."
